Chapter 15: Will — This is Lawyer Qian.
Ye Zhen Zhen stared blankly. She had actually heard this name previously when housekeeper Zhou had mentioned it.
Hearing that Ye Zhen Zhen wasn’t saying anything, on the other side of the line, Sun Qian opened her mouth to continue speaking. “He just got off the plane and still needs to return to the lawyer office to grab a few papers. In the evening, he’ll probably come here.”
“I got it,” Ye Zhen Zhen responded and hung up the call. Holding her phone and frowning, Ye Zhen Zhen glanced at Uncle Wu, who was driving the car, and said, “Uncle Wu, drive back to school. I just remembered that I also have a class this afternoon.”
“Okay, Miss.” Uncle Wu’s tone was consistently courteous. He made a U-turn at the intersection up ahead. The car once again stopped at the university’s gate. Ye Zhen Zhen told Uncle Wu to return at 4:00PM to pick her up before entering campus alone.
Actually, she didn’t have any classes in the afternoon, but that call from Sun Qian made her somewhat anxious, as if a sickly child was suddenly informed by the head of their family to go to the hospital to have an injection.
Perhaps this analogy wasn’t appropriate. After all, an injection caused pain while the inheritance procedure only needed her to sign her name.
Ye Zhen Zhen sighed, suppressing the slight unease within her heart. Afterwards, she suddenly recalled that she didn’t seem to know where the university dorms were. She called Pei Cui Cui and asked her for the general direction of the dormitories before stumbling around to find it. Relying on her good sense of direction, she found the dorms with considerable ease. It was just that when the dormitory housekeeper saw her, it was as if she had suddenly seen a penguin in the desert.
Ye Zhen Zhen smiled and nodded at the dormitory housekeeper before climbing up to the sixth floor with a spurt of energy. Room 603’s door was ajar. Ye Zhen Zhen glanced through the crack and very carefully pushed it open.
This was a quad room and was relatively clean. At least, the floor didn’t have large-scale trash that could be clearly seen with the naked eye. All four beds were empty, and Pei Cui Cui was in the room by herself, sitting down while playing on her computer. Hearing the door open, Pei Cui Cui glanced up before quickly turned her head to stare at the computer screen. “Why did you want to come to the dormitory? I was under the impression that you were going home.”
Ye Zhen Zhen smiled and closed the door before walking up to Pei Cui Cui’s side. “I merely didn’t really want to return home.”
Pei Cui Cui continued to stare at the computer, but she nodded sympathetically. “I completely understand. I also don’t want to go home seven days of the week.”
While Pei Cui Cui played her game, Ye Zhen Zhen curiously looked at her computer screen. Pei Cui Cui hurriedly moved to blocked her view. “What are you peeking at! How very embarrassed would I be if I happened to be looking at Island Nation Little X DVD!”1
The corners of Ye Zhen Zhen’s lips tugged. “Do you understand Japanese?”
Pei Cui Cui inconceivably said, “Where do you need to use Japanese to watch Island Nation Little X DVD?”
Ye Zhen Zhen: “…”
She stood to the side silently as Pei Cui Cui continued to play her game. During one break, she asked her, “After I left, how did things go between you and your little apple?”
Ye Zhen Zhen recalled how they had abandoned and fled the barbecue restaurant and somewhat artificially coughed. “Nothing much. He should have returned to the hospital.”
Pei Cui Cui blinked, her gaze finally shifting from her screen. “Why do I always feel that you seem to be hiding things from me?”
“That must be your imagination.” Ye Zhen Zhen avoided her gaze and looked around the room. “Which one is my bed?”
Pei Cui Cui pointed at the one behind her casually. “That one, but you never sleep in the dorm. I heard that your family especially filed an application with the counselor about that.”
“Oh.” Ye Zhen Zhen examined the bed. Although no one had ever slept in it, the cotton blanket and such were actually made neat and tidy. A poster had been pinned beside the pillow, a very handsome man featured on it. Ye Zhen Zhen couldn’t help but stare before asking the person behind her, “Who is the man on the poster?”
The sound of tapping keys suddenly stopped. Pei Cui Cui stood up from her chair immediately. “Mo Zhen—Emperor Mo! You don’t even recognize your Prince Charming?!”
Ye Zhen Zhen attentively examined the poster and then shook her head. Pei Cui Cui rolled her eyes and approached to exploit the opportunity. She proposed, “Then will you give me this poster?” This poster was a special poster from Mo Zhen’s album; it was the only one. At that time, Pei Cui Cui had shelled out a hundred yuan, a huge sum of money, and still wasn’t able to buy it.
Ye Zhen Zhen nodded and said, “You can take it if you like it.”
“Really?!” Pei Cui Cui simply wanted to go up and kiss her on the mouth. “After having a little apple, you’re really different!”
Ye Zhen Zhen quirked her lips. “Since I never stayed here, why would I pin a poster here?”
“Oh, I heard your family doesn’t let you pin posters.” Pei Cui Cui was already climbing on Ye Zhen Zhen’s bed and tearing down the poster from the wall. “Oh, that’s right. When do you have the time to go watch movies with us? If we don’t go soon,《 Ghost School 》will not be played anymore.”
Ghost School? It seemed to be a ghost movie just from listening to its name. Ye Zhen Zhen took off her shoes and climbed onto Pei Cui Cui’s bed, pondering whether she should go and watch. Pei Cui Cui saw Ye Zhen Zhen lying on her bed and knocked on the bed with disatisfaction. “Your bed is in the opposite direction.”
“That bed had no one sleeping in it for a very long time, very dusty. I’ll get up after taking an afternoon nap.” Ye Zhen Zhen pushed aside Pei Cui Cui’s fingers, covered herself with the blanket, and lay down.
Pei Cui Cui speechlessly frowned. This young heiress losing her memory was the same as metal being melted down and forged again. Her whole personality was wrong.
Ye Zhen Zhen slept until 3:30PM before waking up on her own. Pei Cui Cui was still sitting underneath and playing her game. Ye Zhen Zhen called out to her that she was leaving. When she walked to the university’s gate, Uncle Wu’s car was already waiting for her there.
She watched as the amount of people increasingly lessened on the road back to the Ye Family’s mansion. Ye Zhen Zhen’s originally calmed heartbecame tense.
When the black car drove into the garden, Ye Zhen Zhen’s gaze subconsciously moved. There were several cars parked outside the gate. Apart from Qin Kong’s sports car, there were other two cars she had not seen before.
It seemed that this inheritance procedure managed to cause quite a stir.
Ye Zhen Zhen exited the car and took a deep breath. She pushed open the door to the room. There were already many people gathered within the brightly lit drawing room. Ye Zhen Zhen walked inside and looked around. Not just Qin Kong, her uncle, and aunt, but even housekeeper Zhou and Wang Er Gou respectfully stood to the side. What surprised her the most was that Zuo Yi had unexpectedly come as well.
“Hello, Officer Zuo.” Ye Zhen Zhen walked up to Zuo Yi and greeted him first.
Zuo Yi nodded and examined her. “How are things; have you gotten used to living in the Ye Mansion? I heard that you went to class. There are no issues with your health, right?”
Zuo Yi didn’t open his mouth to ask her if she remembered anything, instead being concerned about her health. This slightly surprised Ye Zhen Zhen. She smiled at Zuo Yi. “Thank you for your concern, Officer Zuo. My body has recovered very well.”
“That’s good then.” Zuo Yi had just finished speaking when Sun Qian walked up.
She lightly tugged on Ye Zhen Zhen’s arm and walked forward with her. “Zhen Zhen, this is Lawyer Qian.”
Lawyer Qian was a fifty-something year old man. He wasn’t very tall and was wearing a bespoke black suit with a black necktie. His hair was combed, not one hair out of place. His black leather shoes were polished until they shone.
“Hello, Miss Ye.” Lawyer Qian took a step forward and extended a hand to Ye Zhen Zhen.
Ye Zhen Zhen shook his right hand and also politely said, “Hello, Lawyer Qian.”
After the simple first greetings, the room once again grew quiet. Everyone’s gazes were focused on Lawyer Qian. Lawyer Qian seemed to have already become used to their gazes and didn’t show the slightest discomfort. “Since everyone is present, I won’t waste everyone’s time. Mr. Ye Hong Sheng had previously entrusted me with drafting his will. Included among this is cash, stocks, and real estate, summing up to a figure of ¥1.2 billion.”
After Lawyer Qian said this, he took out papers from an official envelope. The drawing room was still very quiet, so the sound of paper flipping was especially resonate at this moment. “Apart from the three suites abroad, Mr. Ye Hong Sheng’s entirety of cash, company shares, and internal real estate——including Ye Family Mansion and Kenisni Manor in the country—have all been left to his granddaughter, to be inherited by Lady Ye Zhen Zhen.”
After this will was read aloud, the drawing room continued to be very quiet. Ye Hong Sheng leaving all his assets for Ye Zhen Zhen was a matter that had long been revealed to the Ye Family. But to Ye Zhen Zhen, this was still a bit shocking. Her heart was far from being as tranquil as she outwardly appeared.
Everyone maintained their original postures as they stood in the drawing room, seemingly waiting for Lawyer Qian to take out a large stack of business contracts for Ye Zhen Zhen to sign. Lawyer Qian, however, returned the papers to the official envelope and stood up straight, as if he had another important matter to announce.
Subconsciously, they all stared at him. Lawyer Qian coughed lightly and opened his mouth once more. “Before the official inheritance procedure is conducted, I have another matter I need to explain——while taking advantage of the fact that Mr. Police Officer is also here today.”
Zuo Yi’s eyebrow involuntarily twitched. With the many years he had been a police officer, he intuitively knew that Lawyer Qian’s following words would be related to Ye Hong Sheng’s murder case.
At last, whispers began echoing throughout the drawing room. Lawyer Qian coughed again, causing the drawing room to return to silence.
The matter is like this. Twenty or so days ago, Mr. Ye Hong Sheng suddenly called me, saying that he wanted to amend his will.” Lawyer Qian paused once he said this and looked at Ye Zhen Zhen standing across from him. “He wanted to donate all the assets he had originally wanted to give Lady Ye Zhen Zhen to the Ye Hong Sheng Foundation.”
Everyone in the drawing room was stunned. Ye Zhen Zhen was also astonished for a split second. Lawyer Qian continued, “Because I was preparing to go abroad to handle a case at that time, this matter had simply been given verbally for me to carry out by Mr. Ye Hong Sheng and is not legally effective. We made an appointment to have a face-to-face meeting later, but I didn’t expect that upon my return to the country, I would receive news of Mr. Ye Hong Sheng’s death.”
Just as Lawyer Qian finished, the gazes of everyone in the drawing room uniformly fell upon Ye Zhen Zhen’s body——perhaps examining, perhaps investigative, perhaps suspicious.
Ye Zhen Zhen’s heart throbbed rapidly. A thought suddenly emerged within her mind.
If I had discovered that grandfather wanted to amend his will, after I was unsuccessful in persuading him otherwise, I might have rushed to kill him before he made the amendment and then deliberately fallen down the stairs so I could pretend to lose my memories.
Except, there was one mishap with this course of events——she really did lose her memories.
Ye Zhen Zhen’s fingertips were ice-cold. She had harbored suspicions about everyone, yet, unfortunately, she had forgotten about herself.
Finally, the female lead is captured, sentenced to life imprisonment.
Doctor x Police Officer HE.
